Stephen Sprouse: Rock | Art | Fashion

July 16, 2022 - April 2, 2023

Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields

Graphic Designer: Allison Bowers

Featuring more than 60 ensembles and shoes designed by Indiana native Stephen Sprouse (1953–2004) whose transformative styles rocked the fashion world. One of the most innovative and influential American designers, Sprouse is best known for his Day-Glo, graffiti-covered apparel and edgy rock music-inspired collections that combined street style and high fashion.

The galleries were designed with this aesthetic in mind. Day-Glo paint, vinyl, LED neon lights, and graphic blow-ups were combined to create a space evocative of Sprouse’s time in order to enhance the display of his ground-breaking works.

For this show, Allison Bowers (graphic designer) and I worked to develop the overall art direction for the space. I space planned and, together, we chose finishes and materials in order to integrate this vision, the artworks, and Allison’s graphics into a cohesive environment and experience for our guests.
