Entrance DisplayAt the entrance to the gallery Herman Miller textiles originally designed by Alexander Girard for Newfield’s historic Miller House were displayed with examples from the Contemporary Design Collection in order to entice visitors into the space.
Design Timeline display
Design Timeline displayAfter a small entrance space, the largest footprint of the Contemporary Design galleries envelopes the visitor at the end of a long hallway. We utilized this odd space arrangement in order to present a timeline display of objects spanning the IMA’s more complete collections of 19th Century Decorative Arts and Contemporary Design in order to give the visitor and idea of how these collections relate to one another .
Touchable Materials Wall
Touchable Materials WallThis, materials themed, hands-on display is a prominent feature in the center of the larger gallery space. Visitors can touch a materials and then turn the panel to see what objects within the gallery feature this unique material.

View from within the Design Thinking Activity Space looking towards gallery spaceA glass storefront wall replaced a more traditional drywall construction wall to provide physical separation for the Design Thinking activity space while allowing for increased visual space. The first activity in a series of four is shown here. Prompted by provided examples, guests can use dry-erase markers to brainstorm design ideas directly onto the glass wall.

View, opposite side of Design Thinking Activity SpaceShown here is the last of a series of four activities featured within the Design Thinking themed activity space. This activity introduces visitors to the idea of evaluating one’s design solution by allowing guests to sit in objects featured within the Contemporary Design collection and evaluate on the touchscreen nearby. Results are then broadcast to the mounted digital screen.
